How to install Boom’s virtual camera

Boom's virtual camera works just like a regular webcam on your computer, but it doesn't require any physical hardware. Think of it as a digital camera that exists inside your computer.

We install this virtual camera as a software extension on your device. Once it's set up, Boom can add camera effects, overlays and customizations (like your logo, name tag, GIFs, etc.) to your calls. It's like having a super-powered webcam that can do much more than a regular one!

To install Boom’s virtual camera, please follow these steps:

Note: If you have already started or completed installing Boom, you may just need to approve Boom in your System Settings. Skip to step 4 for these instructions.

  1. From your Applications folder, double click on the Boom.app file.

  2. You will be presented with a warning telling you that Boom is an app downloaded from the internet, go ahead and click “Open” and then you will be asked to sign in to Boom with your Google account.

  3. Next, Boom will ask for permission to access your camera as well as install the Boom camera extension (our virtual camera).

  4. Super important, instead of clicking “OK”, click on “Open System Settings” to go to your Privacy & Security settings.

If you already clicked “Ok” or you’re trying this process again for a second time, no worries. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen, then click “System Settings” to open the System Settings window.

After that, look for the “Privacy & Security” option on the left side of the window and click it.

  5. Next, look for the “Allow” button and click it (1). Heads up, it might be a little difficult to find at first, you may have to scroll down to see it (thanks Apple 🙄).

  6. Okay, onto the fun stuff. Select your Video input from the drop down menu and you are good to go!

💡 Note: If you had your browser or video streaming client open while installing Boom, you may have to quit (cmd + Q) and reopen them for the Boom Camera to be available as a camera option.
